Well, are you? I know it sounds like a bit of a vague question but it’s a useful one. Are you making excuses? Do you hold beliefs that are preventing you from moving forward?
Often in business, it’s hard to see where we’re actually limiting ourselves because we try to stay ‘realistic’ or we haven’t got a clear focus or roadmap to where we want to be. It can feel like no matter what you do, you’re just not moving forward.
This is all about mindset.
Your subconscious is in charge. If you place restrictions in front of yourself, of course you’re less likely to achieve. You can smash barriers if you alter your perspective – it isn’t always easy but it is that simple. So ask yourself, am I getting in my own way? And if the answer is yes, keep reading.
Am I getting in my own way?
I’ve managed to get in my own way constantly throughout life. Honestly, it’d be funny if it weren’t so frustrating. I have to ask myself this question every single day. It’s a learning curve for most of us.
What’s apparent is that how we think about the world around us, the stories we tell ourselves, our own beliefs around what we’re capable of achieving, are all fundamental in what we’re likely to gain in the long term.
A few years back, I was limiting myself to the next promotion or job offer. I’ve always wanted more than the 9-5 but I thought it was pretty unrealistic that I’d ever have the opportunity to escape it. I knew there was more, I just didn’t think I had what it took to boldly go where I hadn’t gone before.
Welcome to Stoicism
It wasn’t until I started reading Stoic philosophy that my attitude and perspective shifted. I began to understand that the world around us is shaped by our own perceptions, we create a narrative for ourselves. And if this is true, we can change that narrative to fit the ideal of what it is we’re trying to achieve.
“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength.” Marcus Aurelius
I’m a sucker for a quote, and no one to me is more quotable than Marcus Aurelius. ‘Meditations’, is my go-to book when I feel like I’m getting in my own way and not telling myself the right things in order to develop personally and in business. Once we understand that we’re the ones in charge of the stories we tell ourselves, and we have the ability to change our own minds, it’s liberating.
I started to look at the evidence, what I had already achieved, what unique skills I bring to the party, and what people came to me most often for help with. These have all been integral in building my business and now, I’m levelling up again. I recently needed another adjustment in perspective otherwise I wouldn’t have felt confident in evolving what I already have – so that’s what I did.
I work with a wonderful coach who has supported me throughout this shift, helping me gain clarity again and focus on what it is I want from the world.
I’m no longer getting in my own way. Are you?
