Benefits of Meditation Practice for Freelancers

Working for yourself requires self-discipline and self-motivation and that can be really hard to muster some days. On the flip-side, we often have trouble relaxing and truly switching off from our work which can seriously harm our mental and physical wellbeing.

Modern meditation (as it’s being called) has helped me no end. There are plenty of reasons I didn’t give it my best when I first started out, I’m sure you have reasons too. By reasons, I mean excuses obviously.

But let’s just remind ourselves of what can be achieved if we actually make an effort…

Some of the specific benefits of modern meditation for freelancers are (but not limited to)

Reduces stress

This is the big one at the top of the list. Stress kills people. In this day and age we’re all so used to being stressed, we’re unaware of the impact it could be having, shaving literally years off our lives, making us overweight and prone to catching illnesses. Regular meditation allows the body and mind (and spirit) to reset and take a time-out from the constant barrage of stuff we’ve got going on around us, as well as giving us a continued calmer approach and feeling of wellbeing throughout the day.

Better quality of sleep

Sleep is so important and yes we all get ‘some’, but good quality sleep allows you to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go. Poor quality sleep affects our stress levels as well as our body’s ability to function efficiently. Meditation helps alleviate this. Better quality sleep also means reduced sleep time – more hours in your day to do things you really enjoy (or work on that deadline). 

Improves focus and concentration

Often we have a thousand things going round in our minds at once, work, household, relationships, family, life admin – the list is ridiculous. Meditation helps your mind to focus and concentrate on the task in hand and in doing so, increases efficiency and productivity. 

Allows for self-awareness

We tend to forget ourselves when we’re caught up in the throngs of day to day life, we don’t take a moment to reflect on who we are or who we want to be or indeed, where we want to be. Meditation enables you to become more self-aware and gives you the tools to take that moment of reflection when needed.

Improves self-esteem

I find this one really important. With improved self-esteem and confidence comes the ability to say no. It also helps when pitching to a new client or meeting people at networking events. 


I like to meditate before bed (as well as at times throughout the day). My bedtime ritual meditation helps me to decompress physically and mentally from the day, washing away all anxiety of what tomorrow may bring and genuinely relaxing my mind and body before I go to sleep.
